May 2025 Updates: Shop Sale, Operas + More

Dear friends, family, colleagues + art-lovers:

Greetings from Wilmington, DE, where I’m currently working on the set of FEARLESS, a *brand-new opera making its world premiere* at the Grand Opera House on May 16th and 18th!

It has been quite a busy few months and I am excited to share all that I have coming up!

SHOP SALE

I consistently have bad luck with the weather for outdoor shows. My two recent ones - Media Arts Festival and Landsdowne Festival of the Arts - ended up not happening because of terrible weather. They require so much time, money, and energy to prepare for and it’s always disappointing when they are cancelled.

BUT I STILL WANT MY WORKS to find their FOREVER HOMES!

Which is why I will be having a Shop Sale of my watercolors and collages next Tuesday, May 20th and Wednesday, May 21st.

SHOP SALE

May 20 + 21

20% OFF existing watercolors & collages (excludes custom orders)

Current scenic project: Opera Delaware's world premier of Fearless

"A new opera takes flight this May at The Grand. Fearless is the story of Hazel Ying Lee, trailblazing World War II aviator and member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots."

This month I have been working for Opera Delaware painting the set of Fearless, a new opera by Derrick Wang making its world premier at The Grand Opera House in Wilmington, DE on Friday, May 16th.

TWO PERFORMANCES ONLY:

May 16 | 7:30 PM

May 18 | 2 PM.

Recent scenic project: Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Academy of Music

For the month of April I was working with my long-time friends and colleagues at Opera Philadelphia on the set of Don Giovanni. The set was designed by Brooklyn-based Jesse Wine and Cassandre Griffin, and painting by my friend Keith Hockins and I! Here is one of my many in-progress photos: Keith and I painted the hand (foreground) and also stained/distressed this red velvet curtain, among other set pieces.

Currently taking commissions for oil paintings:

Order now in time for the December holidays

I always feel odd talking about December holidays when it’s only spring, but believe it or not it’s time to start planning now! An oil painting can take up to 6 months to complete, depending on the size, image, time of year, my workload, etc. Above is a brand-new oil painting that is currently being framed!

If you’ve ever considered a custom oil painting as a holiday gift - or for that 2026 wedding - now is the time to order. At the very least, now is a great time to take reference photos, while things are in full bloom!

Order directly from my website (recommended if you're local to Greater Philadelphia and want to arrange a studio pickup) or from my Etsy shop (recommended if you require shipping).

A few recent favorite commissions.....

Above are a handful of my favorite commissions from this past winter. I usually wait several months before sharing a recent commission, unless someone tells me explicitly that the piece is NOT a gift (lest I spoil someone’s surprise!).

I would love to create a painting for you or a loved one based on your photos. All of my work is 100% original, hand-painted, and one-of-a-kind.

Order directly from my website (if you're local to Greater Philadelphia and want to arrange a studio pickup) OR my Etsy shop (if you require shipping).

How to Capture Carbon: Reverse Ekphrasis

Exhibition at Eremita Cafe in Philadelphia

My painting, The World Without Us: Radium Girls was on display (and sold!) at Eremita Café in Manayunk section of Philadelphia in April. It is UV-sensitive! I created this piece specifically for this exhibition, inspired by the new volume of short stories by my friend Cameron Walker, How to Capture Carbon. Cameron’s story, “St. Lucia Brings the Light,” describes the story of the “Radium Girls,” women who suffered from radiation poisoning while working in dial-painting shops during WWI and WWII. They were specifically instructed to keep the tips of their brushes sharp by “lip-pointing“ and putting the paintbrush with radioactive paint in their mouths hundreds of times a day, six days a week.

Peter Tupitza: Celebration of Life

You may remember that my last newsletter was dedicated to my friend and mentor (my "Sensei") Peter Tupitza. Together with Peter's spouse and closest friends, I'm helping to organize his celebration of life on Sunday, June 1st in Wilmington, DE at the Opera Delaware Studios. More information can be found here.

THANK YOU for your continued support and I hope to see you soon!
